The short version

Fish Tank Plus does not ask for your name, email address or any account. It never sends your files, the text you type or the designs of your custom fish. The webcam picture used for Real 3D never leaves your computer. If you want, you can switch off usage sharing and the app then sends only its version number.

Real 3D and your webcam

Real 3D (head tracking) uses your webcam to work out where your head is, so the view can move with you. The face tracker built into Windows looks at a few small, low-resolution frames a second, on your computer, and each frame is thrown away straight after. Nothing from the camera is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere. Real 3D is on by default and you can switch it off at any time in Settings. Windows also lets you turn off camera access for the app under Settings, Privacy & security, Camera.

What the app sends

The app contacts windows.fishtankplus.com (aquarium.technology83.com in versions before 8.0) when you open Settings, and at most once a day while the screensaver or the live wallpaper runs. The reply contains the latest version number and a short note from the developer.

With "Share anonymous usage" off (on the About page), the request contains the app's version number and nothing else. No install number exists on your computer while this is off.

With "Share anonymous usage" on (the default), the request also contains:

a random install number created on your computer (not derived from anything about you or your hardware)
your Windows version number, the name of your graphics card, and your screen sizes
which mode ran (settings, screensaver or wallpaper) and how long a screensaver or wallpaper run lasted
a summary of settings, such as the quality level, frame-rate limits, fish and coral amounts, and whether camera movement, sound, a clock or a text message are switched on (never the text itself)

What the website records

Each check-in is counted per day, version and country. The country comes from the network connection; the IP address is not stored.
With usage sharing on, the items above are stored against the random install number.
Each download of the installer is recorded with the time, country, city, browser name, the page that linked to it, and a visitor code. The visitor code is a one-way hash of the IP address that changes every month; the IP address itself is not stored.
Visits to this website are counted without cookies: the time, country and city, the kind of device and browser, the screen size, language and time zone, the page that linked here, how long the page was open, how far down it was read, and which buttons were used (for example Download or the web version), together with the same monthly visitor code.

This information is used only to improve Fish Tank Plus (for example, to see which graphics cards and quality levels people use). It is not sold, shared with advertisers, or used for advertising. There are no ads in the app.

Updates

When a newer version exists, the app asks before updating. It downloads the installer from the same site, checks its SHA-256 against the published value, and only then runs it. Your settings are not touched.

Children

Fish Tank Plus is suitable for everyone and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
